Boosting intra-African trade and deepening regional market integration constitute a necessary response to the challenges facing Africa in the multilateral trading system and the global economy.

The boosting of intra-African trade and the deepening of Africa’s market integration, by fostering competition among African countries, will assist. The edition of the African Export-Import Bank’s annual flagship report – the African Trade Report – titled “Boosting Intra-African Trade: Implications of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement” has been prepared at a time when concerted efforts are being made across the continent by both sovereign and corporate entities to deepen economic integration and boost intra.

intra-African trade does not seem to be converging to these international levels; in recent years, it has been marked by only marginal improvements (table 2).File Size: KB. The African Continental Free Trade Area will lead to the creation of a single continental market of more than billion people, with a combined annual output of $ trillion.

The transition phase to the Continental Free Trade Area alone could generate welfare gains of $ billion and boost intra-African trade by 33 per cent. But despite this head start, intra-African trade links are pitifully weak.

The bulk of the region’s trade is with Europe and America: only 12% is with other African countries, according to. The need to enhance intra-African trade among African countries led to the formation of the EAC-COMESA-SADC (East African Community; Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the Southern Africa Development Community) tripartite Free Trade Agreement (TFTA), as well as to the proposed Continental FTA (CFTA) between Cairo and Cape Town.

The report provides some facts on intra-African trade and highlights distinctive features of Africa’s enterprise structure that have to be addressed to promote intra-African trade. It also examines the challenges for intra-African trade posed by non-implementation of regional trade agreements and provides new insights into how to enhance.

Intra-African trade recovers The objective of the CFTA is primarily to engender more intra-African trade; currently 15 percent of the continent’s total merchandise trade.

When compared with intra-regional trade in other continents – 67 percent in Europe, 58 percent in Asia and 48 percent in North America – this is quite low. Following on from an analysis of what continued liberalisation in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) may offer African agriculture in the publication ‘WTO: Agricultural Issues for Africa’, this book critically examines intra-African agricultural trade and what the liberalisation of this trade under the auspices of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) may mean for the.

IATF Postponed due to COVID In light of the COVID pandemic, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union (AU) and the Government of Rwanda have decided to postpone by one year the second Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) initially set to take place from 1 to 7 September in Kigali, Rwanda.

This paper analyses the determinants of intra-African trade (IAT) to assess the potential obstacles to greater sub-regional trade. Both economic and political arguments suggest that increased IAT can foster a regional take-off. Trade linkages in Africa, however, are very weak.

Official statistics show that IAT is a small fraction of each country's total trade and has remained roughly constant. Today, intra-African trade is only 16% of total African trade One reason is lack of access to trade and market information.

To address this challenge, Afreximbank decided to, among other initiatives, convene the IATF every two years to provide trade and market information and to connect buyers and sellers from across the continent. The Action Plan for Boosting Intra-Africa Trade, as endorsed by the AU Summit, contains seven major clusters, the implementation of whose programmes and activities is aimed at addressing the key constraints and challenges of intra-African trade and at significantly enhancing the size and benefits of the trade for the attainment of sustainable.

The final part of the book presents cases from different sectors in multiple countries to buttress the point that intra‐African trade and the emergence of African multinationals is on the rise.

The editors have mapped out the nature of intra‐African internationalization but clearly note that the attempt is not by: 1.
